QR code ordering lets your guests place an order from their own phone by scanning a small code on the table — no waiting, no shared menus, and no app to download. It has quietly become one of the simplest ways for restaurants and cafes to speed up service. Here's how it actually works.
What is QR code ordering?
Each table gets a unique QR code. When a guest points their phone camera at it, their browser opens your live digital menu for that table. They browse, add items to a cart, and tap to place the order. That order is sent straight to your kitchen and staff in real time.
The order flow, step by step
- Scan: the guest scans the table's QR and the menu opens instantly.
- Browse & add: they pick items; sold-out dishes are hidden automatically.
- Place: the order is created and tied to that specific table.
- Kitchen: it appears on the kitchen board as "Placed" and moves to "Preparing" then "Ready".
- Track: the guest watches the status update and can download a receipt.
Why restaurants use it
The biggest win is time. Guests order the moment they're ready instead of waiting to catch a server's eye, which means food reaches the kitchen sooner and tables turn faster. Because the order goes in exactly as the guest entered it, there's also far less room for mistakes. And since everything updates live, your floor and kitchen are always looking at the same picture.
How to roll it out
Getting started is quick: register your business, add your menu and tables, and print the QR code each table generates. Place them where guests can see them, brief your staff on the kitchen view, and you're live. Most shops are taking their first QR order within a few minutes.
